Fatbergis the phenomenon of the formation of large, clumped lumps of fat and other waste in the sewer systems of cities. The name comes from a combination of the English words “fat” (fat) and “iceberg” (iceberg). Fatbergs are a problem especially in cities with high population densities, where large amounts of waste, including fats and oils, end up in the sewer system. In 2017, one of the largest fatbergs was discovered in London’s sewer system, which was about 250 meters long and weighed about 130 tons. It consisted mainly of grease, cooking oils, toilet tissue and other waste. The fatberg in London has become a symbol of a global problem that affects many cities around the world.
The problem of spilling used cooking oil into the sewer system is a major concern for municipalities – and an extremely serious one at that. Sewer networks accumulate oil from the sinks of all residents. Pipe diameters narrow, massive blockages form. Repairs have to be carried out more often, the budget of the local government, and therefore of each of us, suffers, not to mention traffic difficulties.
As in many other countries, Poland is also struggling with the problem of fatbergs in sewage systems. The problem is significant and requires attention from both residents and local authorities. In Warsaw, for example, there have been repeated blockages in the sewer system due to the accumulation of fats, oils and other wastes. The Municipal Water and Sewerage Company (MPWiK) regularly reports on fatberg problems and takes preventive measures.

What can be the damage to home and municipal sewer networks?
- Sewage system in the house – the sewage system can clog in hard-to-reach places.Municipal network – clogs of the municipal system can result in troublesome repairs.
- Obstructed flow – accumulated fat causes obstructed flow.
